Shakti Unveiled

Rasika Kumar’s Bharatanatyam solo, featuring live music, reimagines the all-encompassing Goddess as an alternative role model for women.

“O Goddess, why can’t I follow your example to be a strong, bold woman, master of her own mind and body? Give me the strength to break from society’s confines.”

“Shakti Unveiled” is a 1 hour Bharatanatyam production featuring choreographer and soloist Rasika Kumar with a 4 piece Carnatic musician ensemble led by composer and vocalist Sindhu Natarajan.

The production takes you on an intimate journey, revealing how, as women navigating our lives, we endure a thousand subtle cuts that slowly diminish us, forcing us to shrink and occupy less space in the world. What if we expanded to live a bold and unapologetic life? Rooted in the ancient mythology of Mahakali, through bharatanaytam and live music, choreographer and soloist Rasika Kumar invites audiences in an exploration of femininity and power.

“No words for today’s concert. The energy…was undeniable. Rasika, Sindhu, Aarti, Amit, and Maya moved the audience twice to audible tears. Every single person in this room was on the edge of their seat. The clarity of her storytelling, the vulnerable emotions she gave. She really wore her heart on her sleeve and we could all feel it. And we could all identify with the story she was telling as well.”
Sahasra Sambamoorthi, Drive East Festival Director, Navatman NYC

It was incredibly moving, especially being a woman and being able to relate with a lot of the…discomfort [of] being in our body and following the expectations for what society has told us should be our body… thank you for exploring this”

“[To] see that she’s pushing the boundaries of the dance and trying to bring about not just a new concept but displaying it in every possible way right from innovations in music to dance, that was very refreshing.”
